| A NEW TEAM MEMBER Monday, October 12, 2009 This is a hint:
Last week I had the absolute pleasure of a big hold of Jessie Drimal who has a little bit of growing to do before he can play in the front row, but he's off to a good start.
On the weekend the NOVA junior team were further strengthened with the addition of Amelie Paige - our Sarah Kay's new baby.
Apparently pictures are to follow (this is another hint).
I think we have at least a 3rd and possibly a 4th still to come meaning that by 2010 we should have a good 5 a side team.
My personal congratulations to Sarah and Adam and, as for the rest, 5's probably enough - all procreation within NOVA should cease immediately.

Post Placement Support III
What is post placement support?
In a previous blog I suggested that post placement support (PPS) is both art and science.
Some of our clients, because of the nature of their disability, require our assistance to continue past the start of their employment....
Why we are here
This is why we are here:
Hey Jo its Jenny. Ursula told me the good news that she will be coming to TAFE with me till I am finish. I would like to thank you for listen to what I want....
Post Placement Support II
The following taken from both the Disability Services Act and a recent blog post:
People receiving services funded under the Act would have a level of disability that, “results in a substantially reduced capacity of the person: (A) to obtain or retain unsupported paid employment”
What is meant by unsupported?
Unsupported employment suggests that the worker concerned IS able to achieve and maintain independence in the workplace....
Alan Jones
An interruption to my usual diatribes to both thank and recognise the genius of Alan Jones AO, broadcaster and all round good bloke.
I had the privilege of sitting in on the show for Wednesday morning and watched a consummate professional at work....
Disability Service Act - Lest We Forget!
The following is taken from the 1986 Disability Services Act, it describes the sort of persons that programs like NOVA were created to assist:
18 Target group
The target group for the purposes of this Part consists of persons who:
(a) have attained 14 years of age but have not attained 65 years of age; and
(b) have a disability that:
(i) is attributable to an intellectual, psychiatric, sensory or physical impairment or a combination of such impairments; and
(ii) results in a substantially reduced capacity of the person:
(A) to obtain or retain unsupported paid employment; or
(B) to live independently....
Right & Wrong
Right & Wrong
More than 600,000 Australians with disabilities are living below the poverty line, according to new figures from the Australian Council of Social Service....
NDIS and Politics II
In my last post and in previous stuff I have spoken about the NDIS and frankly think De Gaulle was right when he said, 'politics was far too important to be left to politicians'!
People with disability need additional services, they need a thought through national approach to care, that will prevent accident of birth determining the level of help each receives....
NDIS and politics
In May of last year I wrote my concerns in relation to the proposed NDIS: http://www.novaemployment.com.au/ceo/NDIS_726/.
Subsequently many others have expressed concern about the design of our proposed scheme and the apparently small amount of preparation put into the concept prior to its launch....
The Disability That Cannot Be Overcome
The Disability That Cannot Be Overcome

My thanks to those that have offered their commiserations - moving on - Go Wigan!...
What's needed!
Thank you to those media outlet that followed up with us today following the Telegraphs front page story on what's right and what's wrong with disability employment....
Tough Love?
"Charity Urges Tough Love" say today's Daily Telegraph (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/the-disability-welfare-system-in-australia-is-broken/story-e6freuy9-1226614493682)
We even get a mention....
Abuse abounds?
In previous posts I have suggested that one way to best the intention of our funding body in the new disability employment service contract (note I am these days assuming the best) is to misuse a providers ability to create 'independent workers' - these are folk who have a disability and that have been in employment for more than 6 months....
Credit where credit is due
There's a new contract for employment services like NOVA that runs from March 1st this year and for a period of 5 years.
During this time services will be evaluated under a thing called the Star Rating System....
Pride of London! And today's good news:
Danny Shittu headed the decisive goal to book Millwall an FA Cup Semi Final date with Wigan at the expense of Blackburn Rovers in Wednesday night's Quarter Final replay....
High's and Lows
Last week wasn’t the best week for me (see previous posts). However, it most certainly ended on a high as I was told about several apprenticeships and traineeships acquired for our jobseekers through the determined efforts of my staff....
