Actually - just bad.

More than 2000 people are registered with us and they have a couple of things in common; they have a disability and they want to work

Accepting personal responsibility for their own care through employment and earning wages is a theme I hear repeatedly when I speak with our job seekers. They appreciate their community and wish to play an active part as taxpayers and consumers. They want to build and contribute to our society.

I pinched this from today's Nine MSN (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8408720):

An intellectually retarded boy who was bullied at school killed an elderly South Australian woman to feel empowered, a court has heard.

The 15-year-old has pleaded guilty to murdering 63-year-old Pirjo Kemppainen in September 2010.

Ms Kemppainen's body was found by a family member just hours after she called police to report a rock had been thrown through her glass sliding door.

Ms Kemppainen was stabbed numerous times with a knife and struck with a heavy object at her home in Callington, about 60km east of Adelaide.

In sentencing submissions to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, forensic psychologist Luke Broomhall said the bullied boy had an IQ between 60 and 70 and was desensitised from watching violent video games.

The boy experienced discrimination and ostracism at school, which fuelled his "retribution" towards a third party, Mr Broomhall said.

He killed the elderly woman in revenge to re-empower himself, he said.

The boy's lawyer, Andrew English, said the youth's mental faculties made him unable to understand the consequences of his actions.

"Once he become fixated he found it almost impossible to back out of the situation, to consider the moral impact of what he was doing," he said.

Ostracised at school, the boy found it difficult to empathise with others.

"He saw others as the enemy."

The suggestion is that in some way disability reduces responsibility.

Sorry - utter nonsense. The reason this bad person did a bad thing had absolutely nothing to do with his disability. I know and have worked with people who have intellectual disability for more than twenty years. Many of these people are my friends and they also have told me of experiencing ostracism and bullying. That said, murderers are in short supply!

Disability is not an excuse for wrongdoing and every person has a responsibility to respects the rights of others - we do nothing for the cause and empowerment of people that have a disability when we use that disability as a shield from personal responsibility.

This criminal could just be a bad person.

Unreserved Apology
We have received several complaints about our sponsorship of Today FM's Kyle & Jackie show. I have answered each with a 'not us' and stated that we share the offence taken by many in the community of people with disability following the ignorant and insensitive comments of the shows host....

Second Post:
Now let’s get stuck into the purchasing process! As a person with a disability so far I have had no say – and neither has (virtually) anybody else amongst Australia’s community of people with disability (Here I should acknowledge the work of my colleagues at Breakthru who clearly informed and encouraged their clients to make comment on the process – they were almost universally opposed)....

I am making 2 posts today – a copy of the recommendations from the Senate inquiry into the recent Senate inquiry into the purchasing of disability employment services and a comment on the process so far....

Shameless!
O.K. I know its shameless self-promotion and our Jodie Owen has added webcasting to the offer of her 'candoability' home page. Do a quick cut and paste and if you haven't met Jodie yet I am sure you will enjoy her first presentation and job seeking tips: www....

Countdown!
Sunday 22nd January - about 6.00pm Evening All For some time we have has a countdown clock running on our home page - this has generated a fair bit of speculation and, as you can see, we are only a few hours away from zero hour and from adding some new and significant features to our websites - particularly our main www....

A great week
Wow, what a great week I have just enjoyed! First I spent some time with NOVA’s Beenleigh, Beaudesert and Logan teams – an inspirational experience and I was thrilled to hear about the successes they are delivering to their job seekers and people who have a disability in and around South Brisbane – remarkable results! Then the mid north coast and NOVA’s Port Macquarie, Taree and Forster teams who showed similar ‘can-do’ and esprit de corps in sharing their experiences offering their job seekers skills, abilities and aspiration to current and potential employers – a catalogue of life changing experiences delivered by a highly competent and motivated team of professionals....

Class Acts
Regular readers will know of my interest in the correct measurement of 'quality' in disability employment services and particularly my belief that real quality is demonstrated not by a large number of small part time positions that don't outlast their subsidy but rather by the long term retention of meaningful work - and for me that's employment that the worker finds challenging and that is sufficient to reduce or remove dependency on welfare....

Why?
Why does NOVA help find people that have a disability work? Here's an example: David was 18 and had never worked in a paid job – he has a brother and sister and all three have a moderate intellectual disability....

Last words for this year
I have already expressed my appreciation for the Sydney Morning Herald's Linton Bessar (more!). The following is pinched from his recent article: http://www....

Clean Fridge!
That's it - we've finished the annual NOVA 'clean the fridge' ritual and as usual discovered several new life forms and an incomplete science experiment apparently designed to test the human capacity to overcome fungal growth....

Best Present Yet
I am grateful to Linton Besser (Sydney Morning Herald columnist) for hopefully giving me and people that have a disability the best ever Christmas present – a public review and expose of the systematic corruption that is Australia’s employment service industry....

Disability Employment Services
When you have a chance check out this story: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/false-claims-boost-chance-of-survival-in-jobs-game-20111218-1p0vb.html I appreciate that this is talking about Job Services Australia not Disability Employment Services and the story is just the same....

Transition to Work
The inaugural Transition To Work Gala - www.transition.com.au - has just finished (for me at least). Pictures and a full report will follow. Magic! - A truly inspirational afternoon with a great program staffed by talented, committed and genuinely beautiful people....

Over it and 'moving forward'!
The last post on this blog spoke briefly to our (Australia's) dismal showing against other developed countries in relation to the employment of people that have a disability....
