Regular readers will see that I have added a couple of podcasts to the home page - in relation to NOVA's staff hiring practices and the employment of workers that have a disability, NOVA does a fair bit of this and if you listen to the podcast you'll see (actually you'll hear!) exactly why.

There's another reason to mention the podcasts, and I am not seeking praise, I made them and I did so sitting at my dining table while admiring the view. Technology has certainly moved on and my staff regularly use the latest in communication and presentation equipment to promote the skills of our job seekers and generally enhance the services that we provide to them.

An example of this would be our growing use of Skype - anyone on a budget pay attention. Skype is essentially a free VOIP service (that's a thing that lets you use the internet instead of a regular phone line) that provides pretty clear communication while not creating a huge phone bill. If you have the internet you just have to get Skype. NOVA staff use the video conference facility available with Skype to close some of the distance issues that we face and also to easily communicate with some of our less mobile job seekers.

If you have a tech/savings idea that you'd like to share with us either let me know, or email Jodie DeRuvo at "Candoability.com.au" and we'll publish your tip to our regular listeners and friends.

Meanwhile, back to the technology and particularly the Podcasts. Apart from having a bit of fun on a Sunday it occurs to me that these would be an ideal way of instantly (or at least pretty quickly) sharing some of the experiences that we get to hear about during our day to day work.

I am very proud of the results achieved by NOVA workers and really appreciate the feedback that we get from our clients, their families and the employers that we work with. Incidentally, if the experience that you have is not so good I am also very keen to hear about that too - everybody makes mistakes from time to time but we are very keen to fix ours if we can, so drop me a line or call me on 1 800 656 537 if there's an issue you'd like to discuss.

Let's get working
We are one week into our 2012 advertising and promotion campaign and I need to apologise. Hearing and seeing stuff about us can be frustrating when you don’t have a job....

Blimey!
Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNZVV4Ciccg&feature=share Thank you Carly, an inspirational start to my day!...

Actually - just bad.
More than 2000 people are registered with us and they have a couple of things in common; they have a disability and they want to work Accepting personal responsibility for their own care through employment and earning wages is a theme I hear repeatedly when I speak with our job seekers....

And we went live!
Apart from being the start of the Chinese year of the dragon today, the 23rd of January 2012 marks the official start of our 2012 employment campaign and sees the restart of our extensive television, radio and outdoor advertising program....

The value of work?
We have (or rather had) a job seeker registered with us who desperately wanted to work – for him the realisation that in Australian society work and personal worth are closely linked is very much a reality....

Countdown!
Sunday 22nd January - about 6.00pm Evening All For some time we have has a countdown clock running on our home page - this has generated a fair bit of speculation and, as you can see, we are only a few hours away from zero hour and from adding some new and significant features to our websites - particularly our main www....

A great week
Wow, what a great week I have just enjoyed! First I spent some time with NOVA’s Beenleigh, Beaudesert and Logan teams – an inspirational experience and I was thrilled to hear about the successes they are delivering to their job seekers and people who have a disability in and around South Brisbane – remarkable results! Then the mid north coast and NOVA’s Port Macquarie, Taree and Forster teams who showed similar ‘can-do’ and esprit de corps in sharing their experiences offering their job seekers skills, abilities and aspiration to current and potential employers – a catalogue of life changing experiences delivered by a highly competent and motivated team of professionals....

First week back (2012)
First week back and a fantastic start to the New Year with quite a few job starts and a very energetic and revitalised team! We are really looking forward to 2012 and we have a problem…....

Class Acts
Regular readers will know of my interest in the correct measurement of 'quality' in disability employment services and particularly my belief that real quality is demonstrated not by a large number of small part time positions that don't outlast their subsidy but rather by the long term retention of meaningful work - and for me that's employment that the worker finds challenging and that is sufficient to reduce or remove dependency on welfare....

Why?
Why does NOVA help find people that have a disability work? Here's an example: David was 18 and had never worked in a paid job – he has a brother and sister and all three have a moderate intellectual disability....

Last words for this year
I have already expressed my appreciation for the Sydney Morning Herald's Linton Bessar (more!). The following is pinched from his recent article: http://www....

Clean Fridge!
That's it - we've finished the annual NOVA 'clean the fridge' ritual and as usual discovered several new life forms and an incomplete science experiment apparently designed to test the human capacity to overcome fungal growth....

Best Present Yet
I am grateful to Linton Besser (Sydney Morning Herald columnist) for hopefully giving me and people that have a disability the best ever Christmas present – a public review and expose of the systematic corruption that is Australia’s employment service industry....

Disability Employment Services
When you have a chance check out this story: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/false-claims-boost-chance-of-survival-in-jobs-game-20111218-1p0vb.html I appreciate that this is talking about Job Services Australia not Disability Employment Services and the story is just the same....

Transition to Work
The inaugural Transition To Work Gala - www.transition.com.au - has just finished (for me at least). Pictures and a full report will follow. Magic! - A truly inspirational afternoon with a great program staffed by talented, committed and genuinely beautiful people....

Over it and 'moving forward'!
The last post on this blog spoke briefly to our (Australia's) dismal showing against other developed countries in relation to the employment of people that have a disability....

Motherless last - to our shame!
It doesn’t have to be this way: Almost half of people with a disability in Australia are living in or near poverty, making Australia the worst in the developed world....

November EZine
To the NOVA Home Page quick!!! (www.novaemployment.com.au) On the right hand side of the page the orange box will take you to our EZine for November - what a great set of stories (particularly my bit!) Congratulations to the NOVA wheelies in their various formats that supported Paraquads "Wheels for a day" appeal and brought home the 'most money raised' trophy that I have pinched and that now sits in my office....

Bouquets
Regular readers will know that I am often critical of 'government' in its many forms. So, I should be just as quick to praise and recognise the efforts of our Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Hon Jenny Macklin MP This is from today's press release: From 1 July 2012 we are introducing a range of reforms to encourage greater participation by DSP recipients....

Great News
The majority of people NOVA works with have developmental disability, the barriers to their employment were either identified at birth or as they grew....
