Oresti
Oresti was working in a sheltered workshop, but, he loves and wanted to work with animals. In June 2004 Oresti registered with NOVA for assistance and after much effort he started work in a dog grooming salon in February 2005.
His employer says, "Oresti has a great manner with the animals, he is gentle and enthusiastic".
His Mum said, "I am really happy about Oresti working at the salon. Oresti has been so happy in himself since he has been working there". Congratulations Oresti, keep up the good work. In addition to NOVA's dedicated employment service for young people with an Intellectual Disability, NOVA Hurstville also conducts the Transition To Work (TTW) Program. This program is funded by the NSW Department Ageing, Disability and Home Care. The TTW program is designed for students with a disability who have moderate to higher support needs. They have completed year 12 and now require assistance/support for the transition from school to the workforce.
Finally, NOVA Hurstville also conducts a Job Club Program in local high school campuses, this targets students with an intellectual disability who are preparing to leave school. The program helps students decide their career goals and prepares them for the transition from school to the workforce. Many students then come to NOVA when they leave school and are assisted in meeting those career goals.
Emily
In 2007 Emily was completing Year 10 and looking at leaving school to obtain employment in a Child Care Centre. Emily attended a Nova Employment School Job Club to assist with her transition to the workforce. Job Club is an 8 week program conducted in local High Schools. Students that are leaving school, cover topics such as personal presentation, interview and job preparation and resume writing. Upon leaving school Emily was referred to Nova Employment Hurstville for assistance to find a job.
Emily had helped with her brothers and sisters and has a gift for caring for children. Also, Emily had completed work experience at a local Child Care Centre. Layla, her Employment Consultant, helped Emily with her resume, interview techniques and job seeking for her career goal. At the start of February 2008, employment was found with a Child Care Centre in the St George area. Layla supports Emily in the worksite, helping her to learn her new tasks. Layla will continue with onsite support until Emily has fully settled into her new position. The director was quoted as saying “Emily is doing a good job”. Well done Emily, keep up the good work.
