I'm about to go away for a few days and make an international nuisance of myself (New Zealand - "Focusonability NZ") - before I go a couple of emerging trends on the NDIS front are worth a mention:
There are some services, and employment would be an example, that don't readily package to small hour blocks of time, so allocating 10 hours for pre-employment work preparation programs, simply earns the person that makes the recommendation significant income without changing the outlook for the recipient.
Preparing a person with significant barriers to identify their personal and career strengths, improving understanding of workplace rights and responsibilities just takes longer and an overarching viewpoint needs to triumph in which a system of 'under's and overs' enable providers to maintain quality service provision. Placement and post placement support are similarly best handled on a 'whole program' approach - I have previously indicated how this could be relatively easily be aligned to results and 'the market' reducing the cost to the Commonwealth while improving the quality of outcomes achieved.
The other issue that may be trending (and I would welcome the views of others) is the tendency for the most articulate to triumph in the allocation of resources - so, a person with language literacy and numeracy barriers is less likely than a university educated participant to be able to identify both their barriers and possible solutions - step up those with episodic illness and unlucky those lacking appropriate supports.
While I am seeking confirmation has anyone noticed a trend to move DSP recipients away from their pension and toward NewStart? When we are enabling the replacement of freely given help and describing friends and family members as companions qualifying for payment under the NDIS, the risk of further devaluing people with disability as incapable or unworthy of what everyone else better names friends.
It seems we are at risk of taking 1 step forward and 2 back as the trivial overwhelms the genuine and desperately needed.

Whats wrong with Employment Services? There's rumours of a shake-up in the Job Active program - word is, the program isn't making a real difference and employers don't like it!

Today marks the first day of a new Disability Employment Service (DES) contract.
There are new players and new rules....
'It's nice to be busy' and 'busy is better than idle' and all of my mum's other sayings about work being good for you, and all of them said; we're drowning!
The administrative burden of a new Disability Employment Service contract (starts July 1st) and the mountains of paperwork required for an NDIS dollar (approximately 10X that of the former TTW program) has seen us add 3 extra staff to the admin team and we are still receiving a large volume of enquiries that are causing us some time delay in getting back to folk....

However, getting paid to be inspired is not the worst way to spend a Monday afternoon and that is just how my day has gone....
